Principles of Pharmacology: The Pathophysiologic Basis of Drug Therapy / Edition 4
Verified Purchase. An incredibly well organized, up-to-date review of pharmacology in the context of its relation to other related scientific disciplines. The diagrams were clear and very helpful to understanding. The coverage of the book was extensive. By far the best book on the subject of pharmacology that I own and also great because it connects the mechanisms of drug action with the other biological systems operating in the body in a way that is not overwhelming. May 10, - Published on Amazon. The most comprehensive book about molecular aspects of pharmacology.

Wonderful desktop book refreshing the things forgotten from medical school days and importantly the new work that has been done since. Great value! November 13, - Published on Amazon. The Fourth Edition features:Comprehensive updates to all chapters, including recently approved drugsNearly 40 popular and practical Drug Summary Tables with state-of-the-art information on clinical applications, serious and common adverse effects, contraindications, and therapeutic considerationsA new chapter on drug transporters, and extensively revised information on drug-receptor interactions, pharmacodynamics, drug toxicity, and pharmacogenomicsKey changes to Section 1: Fundamental Principles of Pharmacology, which now provides a comprehensive framework for material in all subsequent chaptersHundreds of meticulously updated and colorized illustrations, including many that are new or substantially modified to highlight new understanding of physiologic, pathophysiologic, and pharmacologic mechanisms.

I got the impression that a lot of thought went into how the textbook would function The pathophysiology and physiology sections are well-written, and it would appear that a lot of research has gone in to the explanations. The one on heart failure was particularly fine.

Have used a few chapters as a basis of the presentations I have given to my tutorial group When I found myself confused, the diagrams were useful aids The sections on pharmacology are pitched at the right level. One gets the right balance of how they work the scientific background and how they are used clinically. The drug summary charts are useful It does take quite a bit of time to go through a chapter. It is not a book one can flip through for easy revision.
Yet, by the end of all the reading, you do feel confident that there isn't much else to know on the subject. The layout of each chapter has helped me to learn the content. The introductory clinical scenario and opening questions are very useful in getting one's mind prepared for the subject matter. My course uses PBL scenarios widely, so am quite used to the format The best part of the layout is that it is big picture stuff: it shows the links between the physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology of a clinical scenario. Other pharmacology books explain how drugs works, risk factors etc very well, but not how they all fit in.
So one has to remember the pharmacologyfacts not tied to anything else. One ends up doing bitsy research, reading bits from a pile of books. P of P has saved me time.
The sequence of clinical scenario, questions, content, answering questions, and then conclusion is the right way of discussing a topic. Once the book has been received by us.

An easy-to-follow format helps first- and second-year students grasp challenging concepts quickly and efficiently.
Each chapter presents a clinical vignette illustrating a therapeutic problem within a physiologic or biochemical system; followed by a discussion of the biochemistry, physiology, and pathophysiology of the system; and concluding with a presentation of the pharmacology of the drugs and drug classes that activate or inhibit the system by interacting with specific molecular and cellular targets. Chapters are integrated into sections that focus on organ systems and therapeutic areas of highest importance.
